An elderly couple from Manchester has shared their story of how they fought off an armed burglar at the jewelrystore that their family owns and operates. These couple of jewelry shop owners tackle armed robbers.

"The adrenaline kicked in," according to Malcolm Abelson, who was 78 years old, and his wife Elise, who was 73 years old, when they confronted the man as he tried to steal a necklace and a diamondbracelet.

During their struggle, the thief attempted to hit Mr. Abelson with a claw hammer as they were in the midst of their conflict with each other. Nevertheless, the thief was ultimately unsuccessful.

Mrs. Abelson conjectured that the suspect must have thought that two old people would be an easy target, and she offered her reasoning in the form of a hypothesis.

According to the couple, who have a total of four children and ten grandchildren between them, the man reportedly visited the store in the city center that is situated in St. Ann's Arcade in the morning and then went back to the same location an hour and a half later.

Mrs. Abelson stated, "He asked to look at a necklace and diamond bracelet and he said they were for his girlfriend":

As I was showing him then I realized he was wearing thick black plastic gloves, and then he tried to snatch them. He said 'give them to me', but there was no way in the world I was going to give him them.- Mrs. Abelson

When Mr. Abelson finally became aware of what was taking place, he challenged the person who was attacking him, who at that moment brought out a claw hammer.

Mrs. Abelson was quoted as saying, "I set the panic alarm off and was screaming the police are coming."

She stated that her husband was able to bring the man outside before the thief ran away, but the thief was able to drop his phone, his hat, and the hammer off before he went away. She explained:

I don't think he expected us to do what we did. But the adrenaline kicked in. I look back and think it was stupid really. Why did we do that? He could have had a knife. I don't know what made us do it.- Mrs. Abelson

In 1895, Mr. Abelson's great-grandfather Julius Abelson opened the store, and ever since then, members of the Abelson family have managed the establishment.

Since he was 16 years old, Mr. Abelson has been employed in the store, and in 2014, he underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery.

Mrs. Abelson, who has worked at the store for the past four decades, stated that the two individuals had faced other forms of criminal activity at the establishment in the past, but this was the first time that they had been confronted with an armed robbery.

She said, "We've had the odd snatch and grab but we've never had an armed attack like this."

"It happened now, and we carry on. Thankfully it is very rare."

She stated that the pair was shaken up but otherwise unharmed and that they opened the shop on Tuesday as usual.

The Greater Manchester Police Department has announced that police are investigating the incident that occurred on March 13.
